Your Pre-Op Instructions
Please Keep This Form For Your Use & Reference
1. Do NOT eat or drink anything after midnight, unless instructed by Physician otherwise. Do NOT chew gum, eat hard candy or smoke the morning of surgery. **AS A GENERAL RULE-ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR PHYSICIANS INSTRUCTIONS FIRST!**
- If you normally take heart or blood pressure medicine in the morning, TAKE them with a sip of water the day of your procedure. Do NOT take diuretics that cause you to go to the bathroom frequently.
- Per Anesthesia Guidelines: *If your procedure is scheduled after 1 PM, you may have 8 oz. (1 cup) or clear liquids by 7 AM. ** If the patient is a child 3 or under, he/she may have 4 oz. of clear liquids 4 hours before procedure. ***CLEAR LIQUIDS are considered to be apple juice, cranberry juice, cola, sprite, Gatorade or water. ****If your procedure is scheduled after 3 PM, you may have a light breakfast by 7 AM. (Example: Black Coffee & Toast). ****IF YOUR SURGEON HAS TOLD YOU NOT TO EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING AFTER MIDNIGHT-PLEASE FOLLOW THEIR INSTRUCTIONS! YOUR SURGEONS INSTRUCTIONS WILL ALWAYS BE THE MOST IMPORTANT TO FOLLOW!*****
- If you are diabetic, remember no food, NO diabetic pill. If you are insulin dependant, we will call you to discuss instructions. If you have not heard from us by 2 days prior to your procedure, please call a pre-admission nurse to obtain instructions.
- Wear clothing that will be comfortable and easy for you to put on in a sedated state. If you are having eye, nose surgery or a procedure on your shoulder, arm or hand, please wear a shirt that buttons up the front.
- You may shower, shampoo your hair and brush your teeth. PLEASE DO NOT wear cosmetics, eye make up, lotions, fragrance, jewelry or valuables of any type. If you are having surgery on your hand or foot, please remove any nail polish from these areas. Please leave your valuables at home & remove any and all body piercing prior to your arrival to our facility. If you are a contact lens wearer, you may be asked to remove them prior to your procedure, so please bring your solution, storage case & your glasses with you.
- It is IMPERATIVE that you have a ride home and someone to stay with you 24 hours following your procedure. Please plan on having your driver remain with you for the entire procedure if at all possible. Some physicians may not perform your procedure if you do not have a responsible adult present for the procedure due to possible legal issues. It is ILLEGAL for you to drive after sedation.
- Bring anything you may need for surgery: eye kits, crutches or x-rays. For children: please bring extra diapers, clean baby bottle, sippy cup, favorite blanket, toy or stuffed animal. If you have someone to be responsible for your items during your procedure, you can bring a book, Walkman or similar item to help occupy you during your waiting time.
- Please arrive at our Center 1 ˝ hours prior to your SCHEDULED procedure time, unless your physician has instructed you otherwise. Some physicians prefer their patients to arrive 2 hours prior to their scheduled procedure in case their schedules are moving along ahead of schedule! As always, please follow the physician's instructions first! Bring any papers you may have received from your Doctor's office, your Informed Consent, copies of Living Wills, Powers of Attorney (if needed for medical treatment of the patient), your insurance card and a photo ID. If you have reading glasses, bring them with you.
